A GWYNEDD farmer yesterday pleaded guilty to a catalogue of neglect on
his land - including not getting rid of cows after they had died.

Arfon Jones, who has a 500- acre family farm in Gwynedd, pleaded
guilty to 13 livestock offences at Caernarfon Crown Court yesterday.

The 72-year-old admitted he didn't tell authorities after two calves
died and didn't dispose of the remains of dead cattle and sheep, at
the farm Llystyr Gwyn, Bryncir.

He also included failed to feed or medicate animals properly.

The case was brought by the trading standards department of Gwynedd
county council.

The charges, all relating to last year, involve failing to notify
authorities about the death of two calves.

Jones also admitted six counts of not disposing of the remains of dead
cattle and sheep, not applying ear tags to a Welsh Black cow, three
charges of not supplying adequate medical treatment and one of
omitting to provide sufficient food.

Judge Merfyn Hughes, QC, was told by Sion ap Mihangel, prosecuting,
that no interim order to dispose of the stock could be made at this
stage.

Mr ap Mihangel said five visits had been made to the farm between
February and July last year.

Jones accepted that "his continued involvement in farming is likely to
cease," his barrister Owen Edwards told Judge Merfyn Hughes.

Mr Edwards said the Jones family kept both cattle and sheep at the
farm, in Garndolbenmaen.

"I have advised him that he should sell the cattle, though some could
be difficult to sell because of their age," the lawyer said.

Whether the farm could be kept within the family or rented to another
farmer would have to be considered.

"He wishes to keep it within the family but the options are limited,"
Mr Owen added. He said it would be easier to maintain sheep than
cattle.

The judge was told that in July 2006 Jones had been fined £4,470 by
magistrates at Pwllheli for livestock offences.

Judge Hughes said he would need to know "what his intentions are in
the future and whether he intends to continue farming."

Jones will be sentenced at the end of March. A pre-sentence report was
ordered by the judge.

I would recommend that the forestry grant be taken - native
regeneration and plantings. On this sort of acreage the owner would be
in receipt of several thousands in yearly payments (in lou of
agricultural income) - especially if they are an 'offical farmer' -
i.e. obtaining 25% or more of their income from farming. That would
make sense in many ways - but of course the farming and livestock
industry does not work by logic. (but by wild dog ritual abuse!).
They are pathalogically anti even native trees in wales, in general,
in the farming scene. Its truely pathetic really seeing as the sheep
rancing hegmony was brought in as an act of colonialistc genocide of
indigenous people, clear off these welsh ******s type thing and bring
in sheep sir! sheep and wool and pervert for london sir!

There is one catch to this possibility - now the fuking morons are
classifiying some of these genocidal wastes at 'wilderness' and thus
must be left as they are...and so at least grant aided native tree
growth will be banned...but you could just fence out the sheep etc and
allow natural regen. rather cool...and suss out some other money blags
on 500 acres shouldn't be too difficult. Empty farm buildings for
development the odd few acres for pony paddock for a start. The amount
of actual protein as in food from 500 acres of sheep ranch in the
mountains is so low that the 'productive farming' argument is neither
here nor there. Of course, again in a logical world, farmers would be
exploring things like 'permaculture' rather than agro-chemical farm
business farmers weekly disease world armagedon.
