Clover. Friend or foe?
Whilst hoeing the weeds today I wondered if clover should be hoed up or
left to grow amongst the vegetables? I seem to remember that it puts nitrogen into the soil - but does it do so to the immediate benefit of surrounding plants? So regarding vegetables it grows amongst is it a bonus or a pest? -- David in Normandy. Clover. Friend or foe?

Whether or not to leave it depends which clover it is and what the topgrowth is doing. The short white small leaf one found in lawns is unlikely to affect any crops adversely. The tall red one (sown as a green manure) , is so tall and lush it might shade out crops or compete for water in a dry spell. I'd leave the first, and hoe the top off the second (for compost). Thanks Janet. At the moment I'm not sure which variety it is. I just recognise it by the leaves. I'll let it grow and see which (or both) varieties it is. It is all self set, like the weeds, from who knows where. It tends to appear in difficult to reach/weed places, like in the middle of a clump of chives. -- David in Normandy.
