name of this cistus, please
An oldish plant that was getting leggy and had put up with two seasons
of light cutting back (yes, I know I shouldn't have) but is now dying after the third trim. I'd like to replace it as it attracted some interesting insects. The flowers were the usual white with yellow centre but the leaf is quite small as my finger shows in scale. Would appreciate it if someone could name it - thanks. |

Give it some time to see if it recovers; a lot of my cistus suffered from the long frosts this winter but I'm hoping some survive if only as propagation material. Thanks, Janet. I've another cistus which I planted to understudy the older one (lost the tag and can't remember the name of this either - seemingly same flower but much larger pinnate leaves) which is already covered in healthy buds. That's why I'd sort of given up on the older plant but I suppose one never knows. I'll leave it for now and cross fingers. I'd like to replace it as it attracted some interesting insects. After such a cold winter, cistus may be in short supply this season; I would recommend you take cuttings from live parts of the one you've got. Put half a dozen round the edge of a plastic pot with gritty compost, they root quite easily. Beyond sticking miscellaneous prunings straight into soil, with very limited success, I've not really got to the bottom of making cuttings. I've got some seed compost and hormone rooting compound. Is there any special routine? A particular place to cut the stems? (these are extremely thin but they all appear to be green). Janet. |
