Thornless roses
Does anyone know of a thornless rose, other than Zephirine Druouhin?
I cut back my ZD hard when I had my fence replaced recently and it doesn't seem to be showing any new growth.Are there others which are thornless? I'd like to put another rose further along the fence. I don't grow anything with thorns, so no other roses, and now with failing sight it's even more important to me to have one without thorns but with scent. Any ideas? Pam in Bristol |

I've got a 'Kathleen Harrop' which is a paler pink sport of ZD. I grow it over an arch and, given my unfavourable sandy soil, it does well. It's also thornless and has a good scent and repeat flowers. The only drawback is that it does suffer a bit with the dreaded black-spot most years unless sprayed. -- Sue |

Pam in Bristol The only others I can think of off the top of my head is Rosa banksiae lutescens and R. b. lutea but they're not very scented, though do have some perfume. They also flower on old wood so no heavy pruning is a good thing. Had you considered a Clematis flammula which is wonderfully scented and terribly pretty with its tiny white flowers? Thanks for the suggestion Sacha. I have several clematis, but not flammula, though It's got an almondy scent hasn't it, and I wasn't too keen when I encountered one once. It is a rose I want, but I'm afraid yellow does not have a place in my very small garden, except for narcissi. I saw a Rosa banksiae trained on an old house a few years ago, and it looked wonderful, but it's not for me. (House near Marshfield, near Dyrham Park called Ridley's Cheer, Mountain Bower! Last year one of my roses won me the Best Specimen Bloom cup at the local gardening club, but there were a lot fewer entries last year than most. I don't think it would have won against a full set of competitors. But I'll give it another go this year. |
