RHS Show St Vincent Square
Good day out at the RHS spring show today, the weather was a bit
inclement but there were a lot of bulbs and early spring flowers on display. Snowdrops galore priced incredibly high but i guess that's due to rarity value. The design part of the show was not so thrilling, the sample of roof garden that one stallholder had on display would not encourage anyone to invest in such a horticultural gamble! One part of the display had plants knitted together and generously interlaced with flowering bittercress! Some really stupid 'urban' ideas for decorating your patch of green, though one of the wall plantings was very good. However if you only have ten feet square of outside space and intend to grow largish box balls and other topiary I would venture to suggest that the box balls be immaculately clipped not with a bad hair day outline! The NGS book was on sale and being snapped up and i managed to buy two Darlac blade sharpeners for £15. The lecture by Roddy Llweellyn was surprisingly funny and he assumed a certain amount of knowledge in the audience so you felt like you were talking to a fellow enthusiastic. Lots of great pictures though he gets some of his plant names confused Can i go on to HIGHLY recommend that if you are going anywhere near the square and need a meal PLEASE try the Vincent Rooms just round the corner from the RHS venue. This is the outlet for 2nd and 3rd year students from the Catering College and you can reserve a table during term time. The students are reality competent, polite and friendly, the venue is spacious and clean and tidy and the food is great and very cheap for London! Not a long menu but about 6 choices ranging from 6 - 11 pounds for a main course. By the entrance there was fresh bread in various guises for sale including ciabatta, plain white, Panetonne, onion and other flavours. We felt so impressed by the students that we have all written to the college when we got home! Website with details (I have no connection with the college or students) is http://www.thevincentrooms.com/ Mind you there was the enormous plates and dabs of stuff like 'foam' of spinach etc. around the main ingredients but you can't have chips with everything i suppose Janet -- Janet Tweedy Dalmatian Telegraph http://www.lancedal.demon.co.uk |
