"Don't do a war dance round it!"
Am I the only person who remembers this comment?
It was said by Percy Thrower in one of his programs all those years
ago. My Dad latched on to the phrase and it has been a family saying
ever since and each time I see a TV gardener putting his boot round a
plant to firm it in,as Monty did last night, I "hear" Percy saying
it.

Oh! you sod:-(.... see. I did it as well.
Percy was a gardener, Monty is not and never will be. I did it again!
Seriously though, my dad and grandad respected what Percy had to say.

I wonder how many really remember Percy.
He spent most of his life working in Parks, around 30 as Parks
superintendent, this was a chiefly desk job.
I remember him from Shrewsbury Flower show as well as his time on
gardeners work from the roof of the BBC building with the glassless
greenhouse, turf that stuck to the hollow tine fork when he was showing
how to aerate the law.

Absolutely lovely man - immensely generous with his time, knowledge
and friendship. I was lucky enough to get to know him during the late
70's until his death in the late 80's and together with Arthur
Billett, Bob Price and Percy Picton, we did a few charity Gardener's
Question Times around the Midlands and also charity talks in aid of
Blind Camps for India and the like. Percy's deliberate and paced
style of presentation might not impress today's tissue-thin sound-bite
media or those who only want the very basics delivered quickly enough
for them to be forgotten in an instant. However, he was the most
thorough TV gardener whose years of experience and expertise shone out
during every programme. He was a joy to watch and a privilege to
know.
