Default Walnut roots

Is my memory failing me, or is the root bark of large walnut roots
brown to grey?

Because, if so, a 5" diameter root I have just dug up belonged
to a holly that we cut down over a decade ago. And it is still
alive - not just intact, but alive!

There are other reasons to doubt the walnut, too.

Regards,
Nick Maclaren.
