Default Young yew hedge

I have a yew hedge in its second/third season. The tiny bare-rooted sprigs
that I planted are now about 30in tall. Should I just let them grow to the
desired height and depth, and then prune as nesessary, or do i need to start
cutting back now to ensure denseness (new word!) later?

let them grow unchecked to 12" above the height you want the hedge cut down
to 12" below the desired height that trim when reaches desired height. That
way the cut trunk is hidden.

wrt depth apply the same sort of principle
