Gill Hall wrote or quoted: Britain gave the thumbs up this week for commercial planting of genetically modified (GM) maize, risking a backlash from environmentalists and a sceptical public What the public thinks is of absolutely no consequence to 'the powers that be' - we have found that out the hard way. I often wonder if we live in a democracy any more. We certainly don't have freedom of speech any more :(((( -- Jane Ransom in Lancaster. In article , Sacha writes We've so over used pesticides, ripped out hedges, cleared ground cover that we have lost vast numbers of birds, butterflies, wild flowers - think DDT, alone banned, I think in 1947? When did you last hear a cuckoo? We hear them here every year, still. But no nightjars any more :( But I am ANTI GM, so don't think I am 'getting at you' :))) LOL. No, Jane, I'll 'get over it'. I wonder why we don't hear them in this part of England. We have a lot of woods and spinneys near us and plentiful other birdlife, too. Very peculiar. -- Sacha (remove the weeds to email me) |

I haven't seen pipits or warblers but lots of sparrows and robins, a few pied wagtails, though not many. I didn't realise cuckoos were fussy as to which nests they usurped! This wouldn't account for others around here not having cuckoos but I wonder if our very noisy and busy rookery keeps them away. -- Sacha (remove the weeds to email me) |

They (FSVO they) have a list of about fifty species they will use as host for their pretty babies, but I don't think it's known whether any hen cuckoo will choose any of the fifty, or perhaps, just those which match the colour of her eggs. -- Rusty Open the creaking gate to make a horrid.squeak, then lower the foobar. http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/hi-fi/ |
