Watering still needed
Just an observation but we've noticed that despite really torrential rain
lately, some things still need watering. We have some 3 yo Euryops growing in Ali Baba pots and they're bone dry because the rain hasn't penetrated their foliage cover. It really astonished me to see how dry they were. Of course, the strong winds we've had probably haven't helped, either! -- Sacha www.hillhousenursery.co.uk South Devon (remove the weeds after garden to email me) |

I've also been down there hoeing today and you can't do that if the ground is wet. With our hanging baskets I water every day without fail no matter what the weather does, the foliage cover stops most rain from entering the basket, it just runs off like a thatched cottage. That's why I posted, really. I think a lot of people and perhaps, especially, newbies, won't realise that when things have been as dry as they are, even that 'drop of rain' won't do enough for long enough. And we have a few customers every year (usually newbies themselves!) who complain their hanging baskets have died - so "did you water them?" we say. "Oh no, because it rained". What with foliage cover and perhaps house 'shadow', hanging baskets or tubs can rarely go un-watered, though the latter must drain, too. -- Sacha www.hillhousenursery.co.uk South Devon (remove the weeds after garden to email me) |
