Almost all garden plants like a high content of decayed plant fibre
in the soil: it holds moisture without causing the roots to rot, and
lets air in. But it's not good practice to use peat these days, for
wildlife reasons: getting the peat out destroys habitat. Compost is
good, as are the substitutes they sell in garden centres. The
substitutes are things like composted bark or coconut fibre. Get
rotted farmyard or stable manure if you can, too.

I use the peat-free grow-bags they sell (though they aren't actually
perfect) for tomatoes and such, and add the contents to the garden at
the end of the season.
