Splitting apart tulips

I realize that I have to wait until fall time, but how is the best way to
divide tulips? How often do you have to do it. I have some that are 3
years old and are getting pretty crowded, so I assume they can be divided.

You can divide any time after the tops die down, then re-plant in the fall.
How often depends on how happy the tulips are, as evidenced by
multiplication.

Thanks Gary. What will happen if I don't dig them up and divide them?

I live on a corner lot and have planted about 6 dwarf fruit trees along the
street. I put scalloped cement edging blocks around each tree, forming a 2
foot square, 4 inch high wall around each tree. Then I planted tulips
inside each of them. That was 3 years ago, and the tulip display is really
impressive, but there is getting to be a lot of them. If I leave them
alone, will I get in trouble?

Thanks again, Dwayne

I have some that were neglected totally for over 25 years and are
flowering beautifully right now.

However, I notice you talk about "fall" which is not a season we have in
the United Kingdom itself although some of our colonies have it :-) If
your climate is not NW European, the best way of growing tulips may be
different and you should find a more local newsgroup.
