How much would you expect to pay a gardener for ordinary grass cutting type
work, in England Southern Counties?
Should you pay for travelling time, or just time working on site?

What wage would the grass-cutter need to buy a house in the area? If he/she
lived 50 miles away and only worked an hour could your conscience live with
paying £4.85 an hour? The healthy option is to do it yourself.

I know several people in your area paying at least £10 an hour for
"gardeners" however they sure dont meet my standards of gardening

why the stupid sarcasm?
As a matter of interest I normally do my own gardening, but I have to go
away for a couple of months. Also there a re a lot of people not 'healthy'
enough to do their own gardening.

Under the circumstances you describe, do you not have a near neighbour or
relative who would do it for you? We will be away for 3 months, but a
neighbour will have the key, pick up the mail and sort it into piles, and a
daughter will forward it on to the various Associations I am involved with.

Getting back to Gardening, the same neighbour looks after our greenhouse and
plant watering when we are away. OK we are away from the start of January to
the end of March so not much 'gardening' to do, but possibly the lawn will
need a cut and he/she will do that.

We already look after their greenhouse during the growing season as they
have a large Campa Van and clear off when it takes their fancy.

Neighbours. Wonderful things :-))

I gave a serious answer, Duncan, just think it through.It's free to
advertise in a job-centre and they will advise ,if you aren't persuaded by
the replies you have already had ,and "nambucca" raised an important point.

I pay £10 per hour, in Hampshire. That is for someone who can, and
does, do quite a bit more than just grass cutting, brings his own
equipment, and takes away any rubbish that can't be found a home in
the compost heap.

Normally, you would only pay for working time but, if you are in a
very remote area and can't find anyone local, you may have to pay
extra for travelling time.

The man who cuts our lawns brings his own equipment, strims where necessary,
too and will trim hedges etc. He charges £11.00 per hour.

Would I have asked the questio if that were an option?

I have over an acre of sloping difficult lawn with a lot of edges trees,
bushes etc. It takes me about 4-5 hours to do it properly on a good day.
Could you send your neighbours around please?

I was not asking where I could find one; I was asking what a reasonable
market price to pay would be.
