Red Spider
My patio area is infested with tiny red spiders, they are everywhere. I know
that it isn't red spider mite. I've tried Jeyes fluid to eradicate them but without success. Has anyone come across these creatures or know how to get rid. All advise appreciated. Sven |

I'm all for keeping pests down, but these are so numerous that they make it
impossible to sit on the patio furniture without ending up with numerous red stains on your clothing. Also I forgot to mention that they are no bigger than 1mm. diameter. If it is a 'red velvet mite' - which are definitely spider like, one of its look alike species has carnivorous 0.5mm larvae which can cause 'heat lumps'. There was an article in the Independent today about how people now regard gardens as merely rumpus rooms without roofs, but that is definitely a sign of Not A Real Gardener. Seriously, don't wear clothes that aren't washable if you are going to sit on patio furniture. In addition to those, there is blackbird dung in blackberry (or blackcurrant) season, algae (not always easy to see) and numerous other things. Regards, Nick Maclaren. |

We had a lot of these creatures when we lived in Cheshire. They are reported to eat the eggs of other small creatures including woodlice and could as NMcL implies be counted as a gardeners friend.
