hi, i've just signed up so hello to all.

i have a couple of pleioblastus pygmaeus (divisions of same plant), one of which has thrown up flower heads.
does anyone else have this cultivar and if so is yours in flower too? does anyone know when this cultivar last flowered?

his stuff freely flowers and declines quite often. Try to feel for
viable seeds and get some variety.

what do viable seeds feel like?

Some body to the seed like a grain of rice inside , not all flat or
mushy.

i assume they wont be ready to harvest until later in the summer? do the seeds need to be stratified before they germinate or any other special requirements?

Mine went from seed to seedling without stratification, can't recall
the time they were fully ready but I wouldn't let them go through
winter on the plants.

it appears i have a few viable seeds. how would you recommend their germination?

success! ...i now have three very tiny bamboo seedlings. they are tiny little spikes of green about 1cm tall and all i need to do now is keep them alive. that might be the tricky bit!

currently they are in a pot in a plastic bag in a window, (not in direct sunshine -should we ever get any again!), which has helped keep humidity high but i fear it may encourage fungus/molds so i intend to open the bag during the day and close it at night to help keep the plants warmer. after a week or so i'll transfer them outside to a sheltered location.

i hope i'm doing the right thing.
