Default Hardy Geranium transplanting

I've just received a dozen HG plugs, that have taken up residence in tubs
and planters. I want to move them to a permanent position in the garden. Is
there a best time for this? Autumn or winter and does the garden soil need
to be prepped in any way. TIA.

Bertie
