Default Overhanging trees

Does anyone know the legal situation regarding trees growing on your
boundary.
I seem to remember that it’s acceptable to cut branches overhanging into
your garden.
Is this correct?

The branches encroaching into your garden are trespassing. You can cut
them back and (it would be polite to) offer them back to the owner.

It is probably a good long-term idea to talk with your neighbour before
doing the pruning so that they have a chance to do it themselves - there
was a recent thread in urg in which an owner of a tree thus pruned was
unhappy at the way it had been done.
