You should be in luck. I grow them and they do well. Mine have got
a little further (i.e. the first fruits are just pickable).

Mine are Little Gem, which I assume are similar in requirements.

Yes. Whether you can get them to mature for keeping is another matter,
but eating them young is no problem. They will mature for keeping
only if we get a decent summer and autumn. I have done it, but it
doesn't happen every year.

certain length to encourage fruit growth?

You don't need to - you can. It is more a question of the shape of
your space.

Just one more query.

Can I successfully grow Sweet Potato in this country, I thought of
planting them in a very large bucket type container and earthing them
up as the plant grows.

Effectively not. They need a long, warm growing season, and the UK
has a short, cool one. People HAVE succeeded in special polytunnels,
but it is a task for fanatics.
