No; they do both with no problem.

so I tried looking it up on the net but I
came up blank. I trust in your advice and will leave the pretty little
flowers alone.

BTW, if I *did* dig up some, would they be new potato size?

Depends when you planted them. You don't need to pull up a plant to
look..just excavate gently around the roots.
