Default Potatoes flowering

Hello Group!

I don't have a lot of gardening experience (having been an apartment dweller
for most of my life) but this year I am growing potatoes for the first time!

The plants started flowering this week. Does this signal a need for action
on my part? As a total newbie, any info you could share with me would be
helpful...

Yes. Pick a flower and put it in your buttonhole, and do the Sir
Walter Raleigh thing :-)

Otherwise, no. It is normal for this time of year.

It means, time to look and see if some potatoes are ready for
eating..they shoud be, by now.

Thanks, Nick and Janet, for your words of wisdom (and lol, Nick).

My Mom thought that "all the energy that should be going into the potatoes
will be spent on the flowers," so I tried looking it up on the net but I
came up blank. I trust in your advice and will leave the pretty little
flowers alone.

BTW, if I *did* dig up some, would they be new potato size?

Some people pick off the flowers for that reason but most of us leave well
alone

Probably. My new potatoes are a fairly decent size after all the
rain, but I haven't dug any maincrop. It will depend on the
variety and conditions.

No; they do both with no problem.

Depends when you planted them. You don't need to pull up a plant to
look..just excavate gently around the roots.

Janet.
