That's how I recall many folks did it. The jar is left on the cutting
throughout the winter months. When warmer weather starts, gradually
prop the jar up for circulation. With temperatures in the 80's the
inside of the jar will cook the stem. Many roses are grafted so
propagating in this manner may result in a weak root system.


Are rugosas typically grafted? I took some cuttings off the plants I pruned
this spring for a neighbor who wasn't due back in time. All of the cuttings
(they were tiny) budded, then croaked. (I put them in soil on the windowsill.
Didn't put a baggie over them, use rootone or use vermiculite.) One year old
rugosas sell for $35 at the local nursery though. (!)
