What's small, green with black spots and a yellow head, and can strip

a
standard rose of all its leaves in 2 days?

I'm not sure which caterpiller you have but it looks like Melanargia
galathea / Marbled White, see http://www.whatsthiscaterpillar.co.uk/ for
more information, along with photographs.

On the site you mentioned, there is the following picture of a sawfly
larvae. It's a dead ringer for the OPs picture

Thanks Martin,

Yep, totally agree with you that's the critter. Although the title of that
picture is interesting SawflyLarvaepossibly2 :-) Maybe the author of that
site isn't so sure either.

I've found another site
http://members.tripod.com/buggyrose/...esawflies.html that has a
similar looking Rose Sawfly. Control methods are also described on this
site.

Cheers

Nick
