Caterpillar help
What's small, green with black spots and a yellow head, and can strip a
standard rose of all its leaves in 2 days? http://www.ldwilmer.pwp.blueyonder.c...aterpillar.gif I've just remembered last year's menace and realised I've done nothing about it. What are they? Thanks, Laurence |

What are they? Thanks, Laurence Hi Laurence, Unfortunately there isn't much you can do to prevent a future attack. Although once you have an infestation you can spray with a contact insecticide, or pick them off and leave them for the birds. I'm not sure which caterpiller you have but it looks like Melanargia galathea / Marbled White, see http://www.whatsthiscaterpillar.co.uk/ for more information, along with photographs. Hope this helps. Cheers Nick www.ukgardening.co.uk |

On the site you mentioned, there is the following picture of a sawfly larvae. It's a dead ringer for the OPs picture http://www.javajane.co.uk/Smooth/sli...possibly2.html -- Martin & Anna Sykes ( Remove x's when replying ) http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~sykesm |

I usually get them on my Gooseberries but apparently they're common on roses too. -- Martin & Anna Sykes ( Remove x's when replying ) http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~sykesm |

Although the title of that picture is interesting SawflyLarvaepossibly2 :-) Maybe the author of that site isn't so sure either. I've found another site http://members.tripod.com/buggyrose/...esawflies.html that has a similar looking Rose Sawfly. Control methods are also described on this site. Not caterpillars apparently? - whatever they are or aren't, I'm ready for them now! http://www.extension.umn.edu/distrib...s/6953_01.html Thanks, Laurence |
