Default Birds - friend or foe?

I have a salad vegetable and herb garden.

I'm wondering if I should:

* Attract birds - so they eat the slugs, snails and other nasties that
prey on my veggies;

...or...

* Repell birds - so they don't eat my seedlings and spread bird shit all
over my produce.

Thanks in advance for any replies - and apologies in advance if this is

a
FAQ.

Hi Tim,
Despite gardening for years last year was my first time with a veggie plot
and I was concerned about the same thing, I read on this very group a
wonderful tip, put a bird feeder *inside* your veggie plot, which I duely
did with wonderful results, the tits used to come to it and whilst waiting
in the 'que' used to eat any goodies they came accross in the veg plot. The
only troublesome birdies were the pidgeons, but a little netting put them in
their place, they would have come anyway, the feeder was too small for them.
One piece of advise I would give you though, use only peanuts, the bird seed
tends to plant itself and grow better than any seed you would tend with
loving care! Definately invite them in.
