We've given up on squash because of the borers. Carol Ann (from Boggy
Creek Farm) says they use row cover (immediately after planting and only
open it to harvest) and a large number of plants. They plant enough for
the borers that get through the cover and for the market.
Why not get your squash from Boggy Creek? They have awesome varieties,
including several heirlooms.
