Default Question about vanilla!

Claude: My initial point was, it really doesn't matter too much what you
put in the pot, because that's not where most of the plant and its roots are
going to be. Roots form near each pair of leaves, and they need something
to climb. When we put them on trees, we don't bury any portion of the plant
itself, we just set the base of the vine very close to the ground so that it
"looks" planted.

For you: Plant a trellis in a good-size pot [8" or better] -- wooden
trellis, or I guess you could strap some treefern totems together to make a
trellis -- or maybe set a long piece of freshwater driftwood on a stand --
in something reasonably heavy [otherwise, the vine on the trellis is going
to get top-heavy and start falling over]. Then mount the vanilla on the
trellis or driftwood.

Good growing, Kenni

| Well, that sounds like good light for now, but what are you going to do
with
| it when it starts really growing? My first grew about 30' [yes, that's
| feet not inches -- about 10 metres if you're on metric] in one season;

of
| course, the first major cold snap "solved" that problem for me :(

| | It doesn't really need medium -- just something to climb. If you

are
in
| a
| | tropical climate, just tie it to the base of a tree. Otherwise,

make
a
| | good-size trellis [largest that you can move in to protect for
winter],
| and
| | try to train it to grow around rather than straight up -- planifolia
| grows
| | FAST once it gets started!
| |
| | V. pompona is slower growing, but more cold-tolerant -- ours

[growing
up
| a
| | pine tree] was set back, but not killed, by a couple of near-freezes
| last
| | winter. V. planifolia will not tolerate that much cold.
