g'day harry,

i live in a similar zone to you maybe 11+ but we get frosts in winter
only a 4 month winter period though.

anyway i planted this little bayleaf tree and every winter i for the
first 2 years i would protect it from frost and it just struggled
along last year i left it uncovered it grew like crazy the frost did
no damage at all.

like the others say go for it mine gets full sun and is mulched
regularly, and lives on rainwater alone we get around 1100mm of rain
annualy.
