Bay leaf tree question
Has anyone tried to grow a bay leaf tree? I saw one yesterday at a Sears
garden store and wanted to try it. I leave in zone 10b. Thanks Harry |

It gets nipped by freezes, but is growing steadily & provides enough leaves for cooking. I'm not sure whether it would do well as far south as you are -- Dirr's book reports zones 8b to 9 on the East Coast of the US. It is native to the Mediterranean region, and it might be bothered by the high heat & humidity I assume you have in 10b. Why not give it a try? g'day harry,
i live in a similar zone to you maybe 11+ but we get frosts in winter only a 4 month winter period though. anyway i planted this little bayleaf tree and every winter i for the first 2 years i would protect it from frost and it just struggled along last year i left it uncovered it grew like crazy the frost did no damage at all. like the others say go for it mine gets full sun and is mulched regularly, and lives on rainwater alone we get around 1100mm of rain annualy. len snipped -- happy gardening 'it works for me it could work for you,' "in the end ya' gotta do what ya' gotta do" but consider others and the environment http://members.optusnet.com.au/~gardenlen1/ my e/mail addies have spam filters you should know what to delete before you send. |
