You are correct, Pauline. Angel Mota Morcillo was second
runner up to the grand prize for the JAL World Bonsai Contest
2000 which was announced in Kyoto at the Taikanten.
You can view the olive tree which won this prize at

Susan, Angel Mota is certainly not a fool!

Could he be referring to the JAL World Bonsai Contest which is
for
anyone but the Japanese?

I just read in the web page of the Spanish master Angel Mota
(http://www.angelmota.com/biografia_en.htm), that he won the
contest in
Kyoto in 2000, literally you can read in the last line in his
biography:
"second price in the japan 2000 contest held in Kyoto". I
believed that it was not possible, and the contests in Japan were
exclusive for the Japanese people. The trees in the web page look
gorgeous, but, is this possibly? Or, is he just a fool? Can the
occidental bonsai artist participle in the Japanese contest?

Thank you
