Orchids in general should be mounted or potted; however, terete vanda
types do grow in the ground. Some of the pictures I collected of the
Singapore gardens illustrate this:

At home in southern California, I grow mine mostly in pottery pots with
an orchid mixture as they do better than basket culture due to the often
dry conditions.

Depends on the type of orchid.
Vandas definitely should not be planted in dirt.

Kind of sick of Lowes to have instructions on planting
a vanda in soil, on the label identifying it as vanda.
