Speaking of difficult digging jobs, a neighbor is selling his house, but
wanted to save some ancient yews which he wanted to give to me. Over the
years, one of them developed a long root (about 6'), so he dug a trench and
finally removed the yew. It had practically no fine hairs, yet the tree
survived. In fact, of the 5 trees he dug, 3 survived. Unbelievable, but
true. It may be a quality peculiar to yews.
