Default [IBC] Re; Birch

Just a reminder. This person is in Australia, I think, and we might have a common name problem here.
A Birch there and a Birch here are likely two very different species.

Basically, what you will have is a big cutting. Treat
accordingly.

Kits is probably right if it's in a wall you can't tear
down. That means prune severely but leave some leaves. I'm
not sure, though, that I'd use root hormone on root tissue.
That's usually counterproductive. Maybe wound the bark in
a ring just above the roots and put hormone there.

Miscellaneous tidbit: I think Austria is a corruption of "ost" = east.
Hence, country to the east of Germany.

And I think the Austrians had first dibs on the sound-alike name (though
the root derivations probably are much different). ;-)

Speaking of difficult digging jobs, a neighbor is selling his house, but
wanted to save some ancient yews which he wanted to give to me. Over the
years, one of them developed a long root (about 6'), so he dug a trench and
finally removed the yew. It had practically no fine hairs, yet the tree
survived. In fact, of the 5 trees he dug, 3 survived. Unbelievable, but
true. It may be a quality peculiar to yews.

I think a deeper pot and a bitt more defoliation might
be in order, but if you have a mist envionment it
should be OK.
