What's wrong with a wipe of meths followed by a spray of WD40? It's
just that I see that "sharpening" wasn't one of the processes
successfully completed by the new product and that is the difficult
bit.

Oily rag that lives in a carrier bag in the shed. Cleans, lubricates,
old oil is probebly toxic enough to disinfect and prevents rust..how can
I start marketing oily rags?
