Check Dianthus. Also, though plants are generally identified by
flower parts, can you describe the foliage if its not dianthus
He did describe the foliage ("leaves that are heart shaped, with an
irregular margin, and from 1" to 2" across"). That's not any Dianthus
I've seen, but there are composites with that sort of foliage. (E.g.
Doronicum, Inula, Ligularia, but these all have yellow flowers.)
His plant might be a cultiver of Pericallis ("Cineria"). There are
varieties with bicolor flowers; I have a photograph of one in which the
ray flowers are purple at the apex and white at the base. The foliage
seems to match as well.

with Percallis and I found it!
It is Senetti Pericallis, the Suntory Collection. I found a post on a
board that refers to buying it at Home Depot the same weekend I did!
