Purple and white "daisy"?
I'm hoping someone here can help me identify this plant. I bought it
at Home Depot 2 weeks ago, but the DH threw out the pot and tag. The pots were branded "Florida Friendly Plants.com," but their website doesn't show this plant and I spoke to their rep today, who happened to be at Home Depot and he couldn't help. The flower is an inch across, daisy-like, with a dark purple center. The petals are half vibrant purple (the outside end) and half white (inside, next to the purple center). I've searched through pictures of African Daisies, Cape Daisies, and can't find anything that matches. Most of the flowers that have bi-color petals softly fad from the color to white, but this petal has a fairly sharp transition. It's very showy. Here's the biggest problem, though. All of the daisy and daisy-shaped flowers I've seen have either fine foliage or deeply forked leaves. This plant has leaves that are heart shaped, with an irregular margin, and from 1" to 2" across. I'm trying to get some pictures to link to, but maybe someone knows what this plant is. KC - near Orlando, FL- Zone 9 |

Also, though plants are generally identified by flower parts, can you describe the foliage if its not dianthus |

That's not any Dianthus I've seen, but there are composites with that sort of foliage. (E.g. Doronicum, Inula, Ligularia, but these all have yellow flowers.) His plant might be a cultiver of Pericallis ("Cineria"). There are varieties with bicolor flowers; I have a photograph of one in which the ray flowers are purple at the apex and white at the base. The foliage seems to match as well. -- Stewart Robert Hinsley |

My plant's flowers are exactly like a daisy's, about a dozen thin smooth petals. Diantus also doesn't have anything in the deep, royal purple I have. The foliage for dianthus is different, too. My plant's leaves are light green, heart-shaped, 1-2" across, with an irregular margin. The closest picture I can find is the roundest leaf of these scented geraniums, though my plant isn't a geranium (based on the flower shape): http://www.mastergardening.com/t11140.html KC |

They usually have that picote flower you describe and it comes in many colors. |

I just bought the same daisylike flower. It is named "Osteospermum Blue
eye" the tag reads: Shrubby spreading plants are covered with daisylike flowers. Ground cover, beds... plant in full sun 30 inches apart. ................Windy "KC" wrote in message ... Stewart Robert Hinsley led me in the right direction and it is Senetti Pericallis, the Suntory Collection. http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/...00381443oIuJTr It comes in a blue and white combo, above, and a magenta and white combo, as well as those colors in a solid color petal. The link below shows all four: http://www.yoder.com/04041_SuntoryPericallis.pdf But the Osteospermum you linked to is lovely and I will be getting a few of them this weekend. Another poster mentioned a variety of the Osteospermum with a bicolor petal, with a softer transition than my Pericallis, so it's another pretty choice: http://www.peoriagardens.com/images/...olorPurple.jpg KC |
