I found this otherwise healthy-looking California Carpenter Bee quite
dead in my garden today. I am troubled about what may have killed it

dead bee wouldn't have warranted much of my concern a few years ago, but
these days you've just got to wonder.

I love these bees. They are basically friendly and nice to look at.
They can get pretty large.

What's the life span of a carpenter bee? Bees have rather short life
spans, so finding a dead one shouldn't be unusual. A honey bee lives 3
to 6 weeks, for example.
