I doubt it was a bird lover, more likley to be someone who saw
something that would sell easily at a car boot sale or on Ebay.

Hardly! It cost me about £2 (special offer), and it'd need to be cleaned
before you could sell it. So no good for car boot, and hardly worth it
for ebay.
