Your site needs some serious work to make it generally usable.

I've marked this thread OT so now we can discuss this here! There
are
errors
on the site and I certainly find the construction a wee bit
baffling -
I
think the end result could have been done with far simpler
code/CSS.
However, to say it is unusable is overstating the case somewhat.
Please
give
details. I'm not trying to catch you out, I'm seriously interested
in
the
details of your argument. There's a chance I may learn something -
I
will
concede that there are any number of people out there who are
better
web
developers than I am.

What really makes me mad is the kind of money that can be charged
for
building/maintaining a website - I know as I've seen this in
practice.
Great
websites can be built from the ground up very cost effectively if
you
know
where to go (which I do!). And it is actually pretty easy to learn
basic
HTML/CSS in order to more than adequately maintain a site(as I do).

I would like to make it crystal clear that I put this site's address
here
for potential customers to comment upon. It is not and never has
been
intended as a training example for other designers and I think it
extremely
unfair and wrong for it to be suggested now that it should be used
as
such.
While I accept this is where your interest lies, Gavin, you do NOT
have
our
permission to use our site or its builders in this way and you are
making
incorrect assumptions, to which we object strongly, about what we
are
being
charged. You have absolutely no information or knowledge about
that.

Having just re-read your post I am even more annoyed at what you have
written! At no time will I "use" for your site for any purpose at all.
What
use could I possibly put it to? Please explain. "A training example
for
other designers"? Please also explain that sentence.

I have also made no assumptions about what you are being charged for
your
site. Please show me where I have. I couldn't care what you have paid.
I
made a GENERAL statement about SOME web developers and the exorbitant
charges that they make. I work in web development and I am qualified
to
talk
on this subject. Again, I couldn't care less who built your site or
what
they charge you.

You really should learn to read what is posted before you get on your
high
horse and sound off.

Whoa! mixed messages Gavin, Sacha is one of the nicest posters here,
it could be that , moi, in a position of neutral, I assure you, that
she read something inti your post that was not intended? Isn't it
awful that sometimes the written word comes over with undertones that
we don't mean? I have known Sacha for a huge number of years, she is
knowledgeable, her husband is more knowledge and more than that, he is
an "expert" on all matters gardening and well respected. I suspect
that there has been a little misunderstanding. When you know Sacally
dedicated to gardening and very protective of what she sees,
as sound knowledge. Pax???? Yes?

Then maybe Sacha should learn not to read into words intentions that are
not
there. I have no doubt that Sacha is an expert gardener whereas I'm a
novice
therefore I would not assume to question her on her area of expertise. As
I
work in web development I thought Sacha might be interested in my
"professional" comments on her site.

I don't hold grudges - but I do speak my mind.

Listen sweetheart, I know she will be very interested in your views on
her website, but it did come over as critical rather than helpful? I
am sure she would appreciate hearing fro you, personally, when you can
talk, one to one? Email works, sometimes. Again, I am interested in
your garden, will you tell us what you do and maybe a few pics? I am
going to put a few of mine on group tonight, if I can get the hang of
i. /Are you any good with teaching morons, me, how to use a computer
effectively?

Where was my criticism? As I said I was defending the site - against the
overly harsh words from Ed. He was implying that the site was unusable. I
replied that it wasn't - although there are errors on it. I asked him for
details of where the site is unusable knowing that he couldn't give them.
The I made a general comment about something that really annoys me - how
much some "developers" (often very poor ones) charge for their services.
It's scandalous. I would never cite individual cases - that would be
unprofessional of me.

As for my garden, oh dear! I have a lawn which isn't too bad - I keep
meaning to try and get rid of some of the dandelions! I have one flower bed
which has a lot of greenery in it - but not many flowers so far. I live in
East Lancashire where we get plenty of rain but far less sunshine than some
areas of the country - that coupled with the lower temperatures means we are
behind, I think? I am trying tomatoes (outside) and (dwarf) runner beans
this year - I really don't have much of a clue! I started my runner beans
indoors - they thrived. But when I transplanted outdoors they went downhill
rapidly. They are perking up a little bit I don't have great hopes - shame,
I LOVE runner beans! They haven't produced many flowers :-(

What do you want to know about computers? I'll gladly help if I can.
