It will kill any small things that pass through it. So phytoplankton
will be killed, Green water etc. Some folks have bad GW issues so for
them, a UV is very effective.
It's not something to be used 24/7 etc or even daily for a few hours.
You can but it's a waste of electric etc.

If you get one, use it to kill off the GW and the 24 hour period after
a water change after you trim, pruning and pull off all the algae(do
the water after you have done all the pruning/scrubing etc.

Although claims have been made regarding loss of traces chelation, I
don't find this to be true in practical terms even when used 50% of
the time a week.

It's rather pricey tool to use for a planted tank and it doe snot get
used often. A diatom filter is good for doing these same chores and
might be more useful to you. It will remove GW, bacteria, and polish
the water nicely.
