Thanks for any info!

AC,

UV sterilizer will only kill green water which will lead to another bloom.
In the meantime it will oxidize micro nutrients and cause them to
precipitate and become insoluble. I would only use a UV lamp in a fish only
holding tank. I entirely do not recommend one and do not use one. I would
invest in a Pinpoint pH controller and an Eheim Liquidoser ( Big Al's has
the best price) as the only "high tech" gadgets.

The algae indicates an imbalance in macro nutrients that needs correction.

Green water is part of a new tank syndrome 3 months, and is sometimes
corrected potassium sulfate additions.Blue green algae sheets are from poor
filtration, with high unutilized phosphates.Beard algae or green floss algae
indicate possible changes in iron or light are needed. The green spot algae
seen on glass is unavoidable and indicates that maintenance is needed.

Dosing Poor Mans Dosing Drops (Liquidoser) along with a weekly addition on a
micronutrient formula will be a much better bet.It is better start with a
tank full of healthy plants as well, but not entirely essential. When I
moved I kept a bucket of clippings for 2 weeks with out any losses.

So keep the following conditions up with 25% weekly water changes for two
months and see what happens-
alkalinity - 4 kH
hardness - 4 kH
temperature - 75F
Carbon Dioxide - 15 ppm on pH controller with probe in sump - 100%
essential (for me)
PMDD - 1ml /10 gallons initially.

I literally clip plants, wipe the spots off the front glass and change 30%
of the water, readjust kH if necessary, add 1/4 teaspoon of potassium
sulfate and am done for two weeks, except feedings with this set up. I do
get beard algae (which I like) and green spots at different rates.

Good Luck!

Drew

It will kill any small things that pass through it. So phytoplankton
will be killed, Green water etc. Some folks have bad GW issues so for
them, a UV is very effective.
It's not something to be used 24/7 etc or even daily for a few hours.
You can but it's a waste of electric etc.

If you get one, use it to kill off the GW and the 24 hour period after
a water change after you trim, pruning and pull off all the algae(do
the water after you have done all the pruning/scrubing etc.

Although claims have been made regarding loss of traces chelation, I
don't find this to be true in practical terms even when used 50% of
the time a week.

It's rather pricey tool to use for a planted tank and it doe snot get
used often. A diatom filter is good for doing these same chores and
might be more useful to you. It will remove GW, bacteria, and polish
the water nicely.

Thanks for your info.
I just found out that my kH is rather high ..close to 16 degrees
Anyway, water changes seems to be the most recommended measure
here...

Perhaps some African species can tolerate that condition
