My light source was the sun. :-) Though the orchid was actually in light
shade, I "cheated" slightly, the background is not a result of camera
settings, as is my usual practice, but a sheet of black corflute.



Whatever corflute is, (corregated or fluted paper?) it works great for you.
I frequently use black poster board or a piece of jet black stretch
fabric (it doesn't wrinkle) to provide the background for certain pics.
The lack of distracting background elements forces the eye to
concentrate on the subject.... which seems to make the image pop.
