I am sure I would not put it in my tank like that.

I think it might be okay, as long as the spike is deeply buried in the
substrate. Personally, I find nitrate to be more a problem than
phosphate. My tapwater has tons of phosphate in it, so I don't really
need to add phosphate, but it doesn't seem to hurt anything. Fish
don't seem bothered by it, and it doesn't cause algae problems.


Nitrate is a problem for me too- I find high nitrate helps BBA grow better
