find lots of nitrate in the water to be more stressful than lots of
phosphate or potassium.


Well, yes, there are of course fish health problems. When I say "high" I am
not talking about "10 goldish in a ten gallon tank, 5% water changes once a
month". More like "oops missed a weekly water change last week"
