I've always considered Wisteria, once established, to be as tough as old
boots, do you know what killed it.

If it was grafted (and they often are), graft failure is not unknown.

As to what to replace it with, do you want deciduous or evergreen? If the
latter, have you thought about Clematis armandii (in one of its many
cultivar forms)? It is hardy enough for an east-facing wall in Suffolk.
and having scented flowers fairly early in the year is a bonus. It is
also a really fast grower.

And good old Holboellia - scented flowers in May or thereabouts and
evergreen. Or my major favourite Clematis rehderiana if it will take
winters there?
