Default [IBC] root thread graft

----- Original Message -----
From: "Sean Nemecek" Subject: [IBC] root thread graft

I recall an article from Bonsai Today where they did a root thread graft.

A
hole was drilled through the root of a trident maple. Another trident was
threaded through. Then when the graft was complete the upper portion of

the
threaded trident was cut off. So it is possible to improve nebari by

thread
grafting.

Sean.

I recall that in Taiwan, they have accomplished this more simply by contact
(proximity?) grafting with both ficus and tridents.

They simply bind the root donors to the trunk (cable ties do this nicely).
It wouldn't hurt (IMHO) to scuff both trees down to the cambium at the point
of the graft.

This is also used to thicken the trunks, so you might wish to carry the
contact further up than you might simply for a root graft.

In some cases, they even tie a bunch of seedings together, and in a few
years, you will have a nice thick trunk.
