Default IDing seedling or sapling paper birches

I'm in So. VT this summer amid young forest (about 40-50 years old.) My mother
would like to plant some paper birches in an area she plans to keep clear.
There are lots of big birches, but I haven't had much luck in finding info on

1) At what age the bark turns white
2) Pictures of young enough paper birches for me to dig up

Any advice or links would be appreciated. My Dendrology textbook did not help
me on this one.

Thanks,

Kate
