Default Aerial Layering - Timeframe?

Hello,
I'm learning about aerial layering, after having seen a segment on
Gardening Australia (ABC TV).
There was a bloke doing this with all sorts of natives.

How long does it normally take for roots to form, and is it safe to
open the plastic covering to check the progress?
Or is it best to leave it until...well I don't know until when...?

If anyone has experience with this, any help appreciated.

Thanks.
