Hello,
When should you prune things like bar branches, multiple branches from the same point, and other branching problems that will definitely not be used in styling a tree? Should all branches, even problem branches, be left on while letting the tree grow "un
restricted" for adding girth?

Bar Branches should be eliminated as early on as possible in many species,
because their continued growth will result in unsightly swellings at the
junction to the trunk. Those swellings (as in Pine, Beech, Elm, etc.) are
very difficult if not impossible to correct.

John,

Bar branches are branches that are at the same level going in opposite
directions from the trunk. They tend to make the tree look too symmetrical
and can lead to unsightly swelling of the trunk.
