[IBC] airlayering red oak
I collected a red oak (quercus rubrum I believe) which has been dwarfed
by constant grazing by deer. It's about 2 feet high. The leaves range in size from 1/2 inch to about 1.5 inches. It is too tall right now, but what I'd like to do is airlayer the top 8" or so to lower the height but save the apex, which will make a nice shohin tree on it's own. I realize I should wait until the leaves have hardened off. Will this work? I thought of cutting the apex off and just tossing it, but it seems a shame to waste such marvelous ramification.
