I like what Guy did with the tree. As for the bending, this technique is more easily executed if black electrical tape is applies OVER the raffia wrap BEFORE the coils of wire are applied.

Many of you would be surprised at how easily tough trunks, such as Shimpaku, can be manipulated if properly prepared.
